The Story Behind Earl Jean

Earl Jean was founded in Los Angeles in 1996 by Suzanne Costas Freiwald and Benjamin Freiwald. Suzanne, a former fashion stylist, had grown frustrated with jeans that were cut too tight at the waist, too loose in the thighs, and consistently short in the leg — so she redesigned them herself.

The first pair — a low-rise, dark denim bootleg cut — went straight to Barneys Los Angeles without a label. Buyers ordered on description alone. Fred Segal followed shortly after, and by 1997 Earl Jean had found its footing in the most discerning boutiques in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

By 2001, the brand had grown to nearly $29 million in revenue and was acquired by Nautica Enterprises. Earl Jean later passed to Apex Global Brands. Today it continues selling women’s jeans — bootcut, capris, plus size, and embroidered styles — through major U.S. retailers.

Common Questions About Earl Jean

From sizing to where to buy, here are the answers to what customers ask most about Earl Jean jeans.

Where can I buy Earl Jean jeans?

Earl Jean jeans are available through major U.S. retailers including Kohl’s and Stein Mart, as well as online resale platforms like Poshmark and eBay for vintage and discontinued styles.

Does Earl Jean offer a size chart?

Yes. Earl Jean provides a size chart to help customers find the right fit. Sizing generally runs true to size, but the brand recommends checking waist and inseam measurements against the chart before purchasing, especially for capris and plus size styles.

Does Earl Jean make jeans for women only?

Earl Jean’s primary focus is women’s jeans and related apparel. The brand introduced a men’s line in 2003, though the core collection — bootcut, capris, straight leg, and plus size — remains women’s denim.

Are Earl Jean jeans expensive?

Earl Jean sits in the mid-range to accessible price segment. Original retail prices were around $100 for full-priced styles, but current retail and resale options are often available at significantly lower price points.

What happened to Earl Jean?

Earl Jean was acquired by Nautica Enterprises in 2001 and later by Apex Global Brands. The brand has continued operating as a licensed label, with jeans sold through major U.S. retailers under the Earl Jean name.

Does Earl Jean offer plus size jeans?

What Customers Say

Real feedback from women who have worn Earl Jean jeans for years — and keep coming back for the fit.

Woman touching hair outdoors

Been buying Earl Jean for years. The bootcut fits better than anything else I’ve tried at this price. Holds its shape after washing, which most don’t.

I was skeptical about paying more for denim, but three years later I’m still reaching for these first. The color hasn’t gone muddy — just softer. Worth every cent.

Marcus T.

Woman adjusting sunglasses

Finally found capris that sit right at the waist without gaping. The plus size fit is consistent, which I can’t say for a lot of other brands I’ve tried.
